  • “Made in North America with DCBA” seminar was held on March 15th

     

    The Detroit Chinese Business Association, in cooperation with NAI Farbman, hosted the “Made in North America with DCBA” seminar on March 15 at the Sheffield Office Park in Troy.

    Mexico was the featured country in this first in the DCBA International Series of seminars to be held to promote international trade partnership opportunities and educate attendees on cross border challenges and global commerce best practices.

    Brian Gao kicked off the seminar by introducing Mexico Consul General Fernando González Saiffe, whose welcoming remarks were followed by Xin (Joe) Zhang, VP of Hofusan Industrial Park. His presentation “HOFUSAN-The Ideal Investment Platform for the North American Market” gave background on this joint venture between Holley Group, Futong Group and the Santos Family of Mexico. Located 15 kilometers north of Monterrey, Mexico, Hofusan Industrial Park features residential, commercial, entertainment, sports, medical, and logistics facilities.

    Al Chu, Senior Manager of Asia Pacific Projects with Farbman Group (Nai Mexico) next spoke of Mexico positioning and competition in the new (ratified) United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). He also discussed how the agreement relates to Chinese investment in Mexico as well as strategies for Chinese companies to plan and select sites.

    Ge Yu, Director of Corporate Communications with China Telecom Americas then gave a presentation titled “Will the USMCA Diminish the Global Competitiveness of Chinese Businesses: Strategic Impacts on Automotive, Technology and Telecommunications Industries.”

    Jeff Jorge, Principal/Firm Leader with the accounting and advisory firm Baker Tilly’s international services department, and also serves as a Board Member with the US Mexico Chamber of Commerce. He provided a brief overview of global enterprise and cross-border taxation issues affecting the manufacturing sector.

    Michael Murphy, Vice President of Corrigan Air & Sea Cargo then touched on his company’s best practices in Mexico and cross-border logistics management.

    Lei Jin, Senior Vice President of Global Delivery at HAND Enterprise USA, whose company specializes in providing manufacturing ERP solutions shared their long-term development plans.

    Jessica Xie, Vice President, Hylant Group’s presentation “Transfer Your Risks in Mexico Through Insurance” introduced aspects of cross-border risk management and business operations.

    William Trapani is General Manager, North America Business Center with Minghua USA. A manufacturer of automotive bumpers and accessories, William’s presentation covered the advantages of establishing a North American presence.

    The seminar wrapped up with Mexican food, drinks, and a networking session.

    On February 23rd night (Saturday), DCBA Chinese New Year Gala 2019 was held at the quaint and elegant Royal Park Hotel in Rochester Hill. Over 320 friends, members and sponsors gathered to celebrate the Chinese New Year together.

    In order to better encourage members to interact with the cities and businesses around Detroit, we have carefully selected the annual New Year Banquet venues. The ingenious design of the banquet halls and the unique decoration and embellishment of the banquet halls have brought out the details DCBA’s teams considerations.

    At 5 pm., the guests begin to arrive at the hotel one after another. Gala guests stopped at the front of the welcome board to leave a beautiful commemoration for the annual dinner.

    During VIP welcome reception before the general banquet, guests greeted each other and everyone cheered happily to exchange the joy and harvest of success in the past year. Musicians from Oakland University Music Department brought a wonderful sonic performance during both receptions and main cultural program.

    At 6:30 p.m., the New Year banquet officially began. Mr. Dan Wiiliams, a well-known host from China International Television, and Ms. Carol Cain, the famous host of CBS 62 Television, co-hosted the dinner and kicked off the banquet. On behalf of the Detroit Chinese Business Association, they first welcomed the guests whom travelled from the East and West Coasts and other states to attend the event. They then introduced four junior hosts; Troy Liu, Erik Josson, Jenny Tian, and Chanel Stevanovich, they presented in Mandarin Chinese and English languages to our gala audience.

    At the invitation of the host, Ms. Carol Cain, Mr. Brian Gao, the president of Detroit Chinese Business Association, first delivered a speech. He first warmly welcomed and thanked all the guests and politicians for coming. He also thanked the sponsors of the event, the annual sponsors, members, and governments at all levels, business and industry friends, and volunteers for their many years of support. He said that the team of Detroit Chinese Business Association will continue to contribute to the exchanges between China and the United States in all aspects of economic and cultural exchanges. He reviewed the major achievement of the Association in 2018. Although there has been a transition period of friction between China and the United States due to trade issues in the past 2018, the Michigan and Great Lake regions, which are the manufacturing centers of the United States, have also been affected in varying degrees. He believed that the economy will continue to develop in 2019, and the relationship between China and the United States will surely grow.

    DCBA hopes that everyone can make full use of our business platform to support each other. At the same time, Mr. Gao also mentioned the three targeted activities were launched in the following March-April to enhance exchanges and interactions among members and explore new ideas for trade issues.

    Mr. Jeff Mason, President of the Michigan Economic Development Corp., attended and represented on behalf of the new elected Governor, The Honorable Gretchen Whitmer, who planned to attend, though scheduling conflict with national Governor’s conference.

    On behalf of the Governor, MEDC CEO Jeff Mason first affirmed and praised the Detroit Chinese Business Association for its contribution to the economic development and cultural exchanges of the region over the years, and made outstanding contributions to the economy and friendship between Michigan and China. At the same time, the current state government will actively support the development of Chinese business enterprises.

    Secretary of Transportation Madam Xiaolan (Elaine) Zhao, who originally planned to attend and deliver a keynote speech on the infrastructure construction policy of President Trump’s government. Because of the federal shutdowns, Ms. Monica Kuo, her special assistant Envoy attended and spoke on her behalf.

     

    Before that, Madam Xiaolan Zhao sent a congratulatory letter to Detroit Chinese Business Association for the contribution of building a friendship bridge between China and the United States.

    Subsequently, Mr. Jun Liu, the Acting Consul General of the Chinese Consulate General in Chicago, delivered a speech. He optimistically and positively reviewed the recent achievements in the cooperation between China and the United States in the fields of economy, trade, culture and education. Although there have been some frictions in trade between China and the United States, the two sides try to negotiate and resolve their differences. He praised the contribution of the Detroit Chinese Business Association over the years and hoped that they will continue to play its role. Lastly, he sincerely invites enterprises and to actively participate the 2nd China International Import Expo.

    Under guidance and support of Advisory Board Member, Detroit Chinese Business Association has been sustainably developed. Mr. Jason Luo, the Chairman of the DCBA Advisory Board, fully affirmed the work of the Association and expected to achieve greater results in the future under the leadership of President, Mr. Brian Gao.

    He then introduced the special event sponsors, BMTS Technology, Mr. Scanny Cai, the Vice President of Global Strategic Planning from BMTS Technology, gave a speech and broadcasted the company’s film, which introduced the comparison of future turbocharging trends and battery energy.

    The development of Detroit Chinese Business Association is inseparable from the long-term support of the sponsors. With their support, the association can develop better and go further.

    The sumptuous dinner was served right after the sponsors took the pictures on the stage. While everyone enjoyed the culinary delights, the musicians from Oakland University Music Department performed a beautiful music pieces, “Ballade No.4 in f minor Frederic Chopin’ and “Colorful Clouds Chasing After the Moon” enjoyable and memorable dining experience.

    In order to discovering and encouraging students to be more involved in business between China and the United States, the MAYE Foundation awarded scholarships to two outstanding student representatives this year. Congratulations to Chining Qiu from Taiwan and won the “Outstanding Volunteer Award”, and Kailin Wang from Shanghai, and won the “ Outstanding Dedication Award’. Ms. Peiyu Wu and Dr. Dan Hoppe from MS&P, a long-time supportive sponsor, awarded scholarships and certificates to two award-winning students.

    Rocket Mortgage PGA Classic sponsored the annual golf tournament tickets as a lucky draw for the banquet. Mr. Andy Walters, from Rocket Mortgage PGA Classic drawed four lucky winners from the guests for VIP golf tournament experiences.

    This year’s Chinese lunar calendar is the Year of the Pig, which is the symbol of wealth, joy and peace. Detroit Chinese Business Association specially prepared the “Fu Pig” piggy bank for the guests who born in the years of the Pig, and wished them a happy and full of wealth in the new year.

    In order to grow and provide better services to sponsors and members, and contribute to the development between China and Michigan relations. Susan Zhang has joined the DCBA team, and she introduced herself on the stage to everyone.

  • DCBA Annual Advisory Board Meeting & Sponsors Appreciation Dinner 2018

    On November 16th (Friday) afternoon, the Detroit Chinese Business Association (DCBA) held their annual advisory board meeting & sponsors appreciation day at the Global HQ of Nexteer automotive in Auburn Hills.

    President, Brian Gao reviewed the activities and achievements of the DCBA for the past year and shared the future plans. He thanked to the Advisory board’s advice, guidance, suggestions, and the long-term support of our organization.

    At 3:30 PM in the afternoon, the annual sponsors of the DCBA also joined us at Nexteer’s Global HQ to participate in tours, presentations, refreshments and business networking.

    The company’s Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Tao Liu introduced the company to the guests as one of the world’s largest auto suppliers and industry leaders. Nexteer has achieved remarkable results and good development under the current impact of Sino-US economic and trade relations.

    Nexteer’s VP Government relations Mr. Jerry Rush and his team led the guests to tour the company as well.

     

    At 5 pm, all 120 guests moved up the street to the Crown Plaza Hotel for reception and dinner.

    President Gao introduced the new DCBA sponsors accrued in 2018, and invited their company’s representatives to give a brief introduction about the company.

    DCBA celebrated the operations of our new China Visa Application Service Center and announced the launch of a group health insurance program, working with MARSH to provide comprehensive solutions to solve the challenges of medical insurance for SME’s and large groups.

  • The 23rd Detroit Chinese Business Association International Golf Open & Banquet

    On August 28th 2018, the 23rd International DCBA Golf Open & Banquet was successfully held at the R&S Sharf Golf Course & Pavilion at Oakland University. More than 120 guests from across the State, Country and from China attended the Open and the evening banquet.Attendees enjoyed a great day for golf, relaxation and meeting new acquaintances and making new friendships.

    At Noon, President Brian Gao welcomed all of the foursomes, the rows of golf carts sailed to their respective starting holes, and friendly  competition quietly unfolded in a most pleasant atmosphere at OU.

    Although the weather in the morning was a little foggy, with the breeze blowing, the sky began to clear during play, while contestants enjoyed a day of camaraderie on the course.

    After endless joys on the course, nearly five hours of play, the game had come to an end, with the team from Kerr Russell PLC. Winning the “Golden Ball Award” for this event.

    After the reception; County Executive Mr. L. Brooks Patterson gave a welcome speech to all attendees.He warmly welcomed everyone to Oakland University and was thankful to the Detroit Chinese Business Association for bringing our annual event to Oakland’s most esteemed university. Mr. Patterson also had the pleasure to introduce County Deputy Executive Phil Bertolini to the podium, whose presentation delighted the guest. And thanked for all fo cooperation and collaborations with the local Chinese American Community, which has resulted in sustainable and healthy development of economics of Oakland County.

     

    Subsequently, Dr. Ora Hirsch Pescovitz, newly inaugurated President of Oakland University was keynote of the evening. Dr. Pescovitz welcomed the guests and briefed the guests on the development and vision of the University and looked forward to cooperate with the guests in the near future to promote further developments, collaborations withthe community.

  • China (Shaanxi) and U.S. (Michigan)-Collaborate with Global Elites to Achieve Win-win Cooperation 2018

    On July 11th, more than Thirty business & provincial leaders, led by the SASAC of Shaanxi Province, visited Metro Detroit area, Michigan, with a Sino US enterprise innovation cooperation exchange and talent fair in the Somerset Inn Hotel in Troy, MI. The Delegates included Top Executives, Entrepreneurs & Province Leaders from various industries, came to the venue seeking for new business development and investment opportunities.

    Despite the current atmosphere between China and the United States, the delegation from China demonstrated their sincerity in seeking cooperation and investment, as well as friendly policies for talent cooperation.

    Prior to the reception 90 plus local attendees networked extensively with the members of the Chinese delegation. At 12 noon, DCBA President, Brian Gao gave a warm welcome speech to the delegation of the Shaanxi SASAC and 90 plus local business and community leaders who attended the event to promote Chinese enterprises, and sincerely seeking opportunities for win-win cooperation. DCBA President wished them a successful trip to the United States, and also thanked Nicolas Kennedy who attended on behalf of State Representative Trott, City of Troy Mayor Dane Slater, and Madison Heights Mayor Brian Hartwell for their welcoming hospitality and support of the days event.

    Mr. Hao Xiaochen, Chairman of the delegation of Shaanxi Gas Group, delivered a speech. He thanked the Chinese Chamber of Commerce for the support and organizing this event. He also thanked people from various sectors and industries came to this event. It is hoped that the various companies of the delegation can actively cooperate with local companies in the United States to jointly seek development opportunities, achieve sustainable development, and create a win-win future.

    The director of the Propaganda Work Department of the SASAC of Shaanxi Province, Mr. Law, gave a speech on behalf of the Provincial State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission.He introduced the development and planning of Shaanxi Province in recent years as the only important central city in the northwest region of the country and the important gateway city for opening up to the outside world. In recent years, Shaanxi province accelerate and rely on its own advantages to actively expand foreign cooperation and promote a new pattern of opening up to the outside world.

    Mayor of city of Troy, and Mayor of Madison Heights, together with the guests, listened to the delegation introduce Shaanxi.

    Subsequently, Zhang Wenhua, Director of the Cooperation and Exchange Department of the Foreign Affairs Bureau of Shaanxi Province, introduced the talent policy of Shaanxi. As an important node of “the Belt and Road”, Shaanxi has been accelerating the construction of a new highland for inland reform and expanding new development space in recent years, continuously creating economic breakthroughs such as strengthening the gathering of talents, capital and information, and developing hub economy, portal economy and mobile economy.

    After the meeting, members of the delegation and numerous enterprises held business meetings with the participants, as well as one-on-one exchanges between enterprises and talents. The guests and members of the delegation conducted extensive exchanges of economic and trade information and business contacts.

  • Detroit Cross Border Business Investment Summit 2018

    April 19th 2018, the Detroit Chinese Business Association together with the Minority Business Development Agency/Department of Commerce San Jose hosted a full-day conference at the NextEnergy Center in Midtown Detroit.

    The conference emphasized the collaborative investment opportunity between U.S. and China smart car and auto tech exchange industries. Our keynote speaker, Kyle Ellicott, founder and chief labs officer of Readwrite Labs and ReWrite in San Francisco, along with Scott Williams, executive governor of the Invest USA China Committee; Chen Hailin, general assistant manager of Shanghai International Automobile City Group; Zhu Weiqiang, deputy mayor of Tongxiang County; Matthew Gibb, chairman of NEXT Education; and Qiang Hong, senior research scientist at the Center of Automotive Research and many more others attended the conference.

    This full-day conference was featured by two delegations. Morning session was focused on Tongxiang, which is the geographic hub of the three main areas: Shanghai, Hangzhou and Suzhou. Afternoon session was focused on Shanghai International Auto City (SIAC), which located in the Jiading district of Shanghai.

    Zhu, Weiqiang, deputy mayor of Tongxiang County was given the first welcoming speech in the Morning session. He gave an introduction to Tongxiang, which is a pioneer of China’s Internal Economy Development place. He also emphasized that Tongxiang seized the opportunity from the revolutionary of new energy automobile to develop auto techs and parts industry. Now, SIAC has more than 60 auto parts enterprises invest more than 100 billion yuan (15 billions USD) to the automobile projects.

    Next, Jim Saber, the CEO of Next Energy Center gave a welcome speech. A series of different topics related investment of auto tech talk were followed after the speech. The guests took the lunch time opportunity to take a break and network while enjoying the buffet-style food which served by Fuji Buffet.

    Chen Hailin, general assistant manager of Shanghai International Automobile City Group, highlighted that Shanghai International Automobile City (SIAC) now has a complete automotive industry chain and become the largest industrial automotive chain in China. Moreover, last year, SIAC organized the most innovative “China Intelligent World Alliance Automotive Conference”, and they successfully become a member of the International 5GAA Alliance. In addition, Raymond Au Yeong, the Director of MBDA Business Center, San Jose gave another speech before the Afternoon session began.

    Same with Morning session, a series of different topics related to automobile talks were followed by the welcoming speech. A MOU Signing was held between SIAC group with Detroit Regional Chamber and Center for Automotive Research. A panel discussion was organized and led by invited speakers, Matthew Gibb, Claudia Rast, Scott Williams, and Kyle Elliott. Together, they discussed how to promote the coordinated development of transport, IT, new energy and cultural network.

    At the end of the day, delightful wine and dinner were served. The guests took this last opportunity to make new business contacts.  

  • DCBA’s Chinese New Year Celebration 2018

    The Chinese New Year Celebration Dinner was held at the Henry Ford Museum on the evening of March 10. Hundreds of industry leaders from all walks of life: overseas Chinese leaders, representatives of academia, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, Chinese Consul General of Chicago Mr. Hong Lei, the Chamber of Commerce, our sponsors, and honored friends, gathered together in the motor city to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

    At 5 o’clock in the evening, a large number of guests dressed in costumes arrived at the venue. Before the dinner started, we were invited to the VIP section with Governor Snyder and Consul General in Chicago Mr. Hong Lei for a small cocktail party.

    The New Year celebration dinner officially kicked off at 7 o’clock with CBS’ Carol Cain and 2014 Michigan International Elite Juvenile winner, Miss Rose Wong co-chairing the event. They welcomed in the distinguished guests to the Detroit Chinese Business Association’s annual grand New Year celebration. Miss Wong introduced us to the “Year of the Dog” and the origins of the Chinese Lunar New Year.

    Brian Gao, president of Detroit Chinese Business Association, was the first welcoming speech. The president reviewed the achievements made in 2017 with the support of the community to play its dual role as a bridge of communication and development between China and the US economy. He emphatically thanked the Chamber of Commerce for giving long-term support of our sponsors, members, and friends, as well as Michigan and Chicago, the main Chinese consulates.

    Since taking office, Governor Snyder, has revived Detroit from the death-throws of bankruptcy. The United States has no other place like this in Michigan to make bold changes. In order to promote investment and economic development in Michigan, expand cooperation, and create jobs, Governor Snyder led a delegation to China introducing Michigan and its opportunities. Under his leadership, Michigan not only has had such transformation and growth but also, has attracted hundreds of Chinese-invested enterprises.

    In order to express the outstanding contribution of Governor Snyder, we have given the governor issued a “Outstanding Contribution” award, in recognition of his achievements. To this end, Mr. Luo Guanhong, Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce Advisory Board, was unable to attend but sent special congratulations over video, and specially commissioned KSS. Mr. Ron Feldeisen senior vice president and president with high awards for governor.

    Chinese Consul General in Chicago, Mr. Hong Lei, was the first to congratulate the guests on a happy New Year. In his speech, he thanked Governor Snyder for his contribution to economic exchanges made between China and the US and also affirmed the Detroit Chinese Business Association in China and the US economy, especially one bridging the economic development of China and Michigan. While Hong Lei Consul General also announced a message: The Chinese government will host China imported Exhibition in Shanghai, China in September 2018 5-8, US plans to invite all walks of life there and are willing to sell their products to Chinese enterprises to go to the exhibition, Expanding Chinese market.

    Chamber of Commerce development is inseparable from the support of the community, we have been adhering to contribute to the community of early heart. This year we are highly respected members of the Chamber of Commerce Incodel Michigan Company has donated $5,000 to the United Way, one of the nation’s largest charitable fund organizations. Mr. Brad Siommans, representative from Ford UNITED WAY, accepted the donation; he thanked the company and also praised Incodel Michigan and the Detroit Chinese Chamber of Commerce of the United States for the charity philanthropy and contribution.

    The Chamber of Commerce sponsors and members have made a long-term unremitting efforts and contributions to Sino-US economic development. They are not only among automotive OEMs and parts suppliers, but also from financial, legal, insurance and other services to different industries. To show them thanks for their support, we invited everyone for pictures, leave a beautiful memorial for our cooperation every year.

    As the evening progresses, lively festive atmosphere increase, fine cuisine and wines are also on the end table. Meanwhile Rose invited chief curator from the museum and Ford, senior director of historical resources Mr. Marc Greuther to give us a few pieces of the museum’s greatest treasures, Mr. Ford’s collection of precious violins, and invited Chinese violinist Sunmi Chang to play to all the guests. As the greatest treasures of the violin are usually not on display in the museum today, ladies and gentlemen, not only to witness his true capacity, but also on-site to listen to it playing a euphemism sweet music.

    This year is the Detroit Chinese Business Association’s 23rd year anniversary, the original group of young people saw the difference between China and the outside world. Today we have invited back some of our predecessors and former president of the Chamber of Commerce to the scene to share with us the story of the growth and joy. They not only witnessed the development of the Chamber of Commerce, but also witnessed the development of Sino-US economic and trade relations. Mr. Liu Liang, founding president of the  Chamber of Commerce, is now the president of China Qoros, will fly from Shanghai, China to attend our New Year celebrations.

    Chamber of Commerce is also inseparable from the development of long-term involvement and support of our volunteers, students from more than a dozen universities in several nearby states are actively involved in the development of the Chamber of Commerce. Today we also commended a number of long-term investments for the Chamber of Commerce of volunteers, Ethan Li, Forest Gan, and Summer Xia. We hope to have more volunteers to join us for the development of trade and friendship between China and the United States.

    Our Chamber of Commerce board of directors and key members, because of various reasons, live and work constantly to replace the old with the new. Cathy Cui worked for five years for the development of the obligations of the Chamber of Commerce, we express our sincere gratitude for her 5-year effort and commitment! In order for the Chamber of Commerce to do better, we need more young people to join our ranks. The friendship between China and United States has been passed down.

    Although the lights fade, colors become even more charming. Delightful wine and a nice day make smiles last forever. Time flies, it is almost the end of the dinner party. Our guests take advantage of this event to catch up with old friend and make new ones. Wish we could build more and better connections in the upcoming year, bringing everyone more opportunities. May everyone have a happy Year of the Dog! WOOF!
